A Tree Without Roots

A man comes to a village and says there is a grave there. By his account the grave belongs to a well known holy man. The villagers believe him and an arrangement grows up around the grave. The man puts himself at the head of it. In time the daily life of the village becomes tied to him. The film builds this as a story about religious hypocrisy. The account aims not at religion itself but at the man using it. The tone is both tragic and comic. Aly Zaker and Rawshan Zamil are also in the cast. The place the account is set in is a village in Bangladesh. Raisul Islam Asad takes the lead in Tanvir Mokammel’s Bangladeshi film of 2001.
