Lalon

The film tells the life of Lalon Fakir. Lalon was a bard who lived in Bengal. He is the best known name of the Baul tradition. He wrote hundreds of songs. In them Sufi, Vaishnav and Buddhist traces run together. He stood against divisions of religion and caste. A community gathered around him. The account moves largely through his songs. The words stand in place of a life story. Other names of the period appear in the film. Kangal Harinath and Mir Mosharraf Hossain are among them. The account is set in nineteenth century Bengal. Baul melodies are heard from beginning to end. Raisul Islam Asad and Shomi Kaiser take the leads in Tanvir Mokammel’s Bangladeshi film of 2004.
