Aamis

Nirmali is a paediatrician in Assam; her husband is a doctor who travels constantly and her marriage is quiet and orderly. She meets Sumon, a doctoral student researching meat who runs an eating club. He starts giving her unusual meats to try: different animals, different methods of cooking. A closeness forms between them that is never physical and runs entirely through food. Then Sumon crosses a line. Bhaskar Hazarika shot the film in Assamese. The narrative begins as a love story and goes somewhere else entirely; the difference between desire and appetite is its central matter, and the film does not leave that as metaphor. Lima Das plays Nirmali and Arghadeep Baruah plays Sumon. The food scenes are deliberately shot to be appetising, and that reverses in the final section. Who it's for: Viewers who like Indian independent cinema, films that push at genre boundaries, and disturbing narratives. Who it's not for: The content of the final section is deeply disturbing and sickening. The food scenes also change retroactively once you know.
