What Aces High Is About
1917, and the air war above the Western Front. A newly trained young pilot joins the squadron commanded by a man he admired at school and cannot recognise him, because staying upright at the head of a unit losing men constantly has a price. The source matters: R. C. Sherriff's famous play Journey's End, set in the trenches, has been moved into the air here. British pilots of the period were not issued parachutes, and the film shows that directly. Malcolm McDowell and Christopher Plummer lead, and the aerial scenes were shot with real aircraft.
