What Aching Hearts Is About
In a Danish high school at the start of the sixties, the film tells of the first love between Jonas and Agnete and of the group of friends around them. As the young move among jealousy, gossip and the states of their own age, the distance between what the school and their families hold to be right and what they actually live falls each time on one of them, and the consequences do not touch everyone equally. The director shot the film over three years, so that the performers and the characters grow up together on screen and the passing of time is genuinely visible. Nils Malmros’s hundred and twenty one minute Danish film draws, like most of his work, on his own memories, and neither prettifies youth nor punishes it. Thomas Solnæs plays Jonas and Sofie Linde plays Agnete; it was completed in 2009.
