What Facing the Truth Is About
A man raised in very modest circumstances at the start of the twentieth century becomes a leading brain surgeon through diligence and an ability to endure. On the face of it a success story, but what the film actually pursues is a legal case and the guilt it left on him afterwards. The man is the director’s own father, Richard Malmros. Nils Malmros shot it in black and white and, being a trained surgeon himself, performed the brain surgery sequences on camera. The ending is left open and the judgment left to the viewer. It was named best film at the Robert awards in 2003.
