Agnes Browne

Dublin, 1967. Agnes Browne loses her husband without warning and is left alone with seven children. She runs a fruit and vegetable stall in the market, borrows from the moneylender, and borrows again to cover the borrowing. With her closest friend Marion she turns getting through the day into something close to an art. Anjelica Huston directs and plays Agnes. The film is adapted from Brendan O'Carroll's novel, and the same character would years later become one of the most watched comedies on Irish television. Tom Jones appears as himself. It neither prettifies the poverty nor converts it into tragedy; it just builds the everyday language of getting by.
