Air Bridge

Julia Rezende's 2015 Brazilian film takes its name from the shuttle service that runs all day between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Bruno and Amanda meet on a flight forced into an emergency landing; the fear of that moment pulls them together fast, but one of them lives in Rio and the other in São Paulo. From there the film follows the daily mechanics of a long-distance relationship: flight times, weekends, phone calls, the part of the other person's life you never see. It uses the romantic comedy shape but instead of looking for a grand gesture to save the relationship, it asks whether a life can actually be sustained across two cities. The ease between Caio Blat and Letícia Colin balances how familiar the script is. Who it's for: viewers who like Brazilian popular cinema and romance built at a realistic scale. Who it's not for: anyone wanting a plot that surprises or an approach that leaves the genre behind.
