What Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore Is About
When her husband dies in a crash, a woman left with an eleven year old son sets out to return to the singing she gave up young. When the money runs out she takes work as a waitress. The film does not turn the journey into a story of liberation; the narrative gives its weight to shifts, to the odd and equal relationship with her son, and to the solidarity among the women at the diner. The ending deliberately leaves open whether she has given up what she wanted. Martin Scorsese directed; it is one of the few of his films centred on a woman. Ellen Burstyn won an Academy Award and had chosen him herself. Who it's for: those who like American cinema of the nineteen-seventies and character-led road films. Who it's not for: viewers who want a clear ending.
