What All Creatures Great and Small Is About
Yorkshire in the nineteen thirties. James Herriot, a young vet, joins the practice of Siegfried Farnon, whose business is doing well and who has his mischievous brother Tristan on hand. Half of what happens to James comes from the animals and half from the people of the county and the Farnon brothers. The film draws on the books the vet Herriot wrote out of his own working life. Simon Ward plays James and Anthony Hopkins plays Siegfried. Claude Whatham's version comes before the long running television series. It holds a balance between romanticising country life and showing it as it is, including the dirty and exhausting side of the work.
