What All My Good Countrymen Is About
The film follows seven friends in a small Moravian village from 1945 into the years after 1958. The hope that arrives with the end of the Nazi occupation gives way step by step to demoralisation as the communists take power and farming is collectivised, and the film holds its lyrical feeling for the landscape and its social and political criticism inside the same frame. Vojtěch Jasný’s hundred and twenty one minute film won best director at the Cannes Film Festival in 1969, where the colour cinematography of Jaroslav Kučera was also singled out. Soon after its premiere in July 1969 it was placed on the list of banned works; Jasný left the country in 1970 and continued his career in Germany.
