All the Long Nights

Misa does not have panic attacks but she has severe premenstrual syndrome; on certain days of the month she cannot control her anger, and it has cost her several jobs. Yamazoe has panic attacks; he cannot take the underground or stand in a crowd, and he too had to leave his career. Both start work at a small company that makes toy planetariums for schools. They do not cure each other. They only understand what the other is and act accordingly. Sho Miyake's film adapts a novel by Maiko Seo. The narrative does not build a love story, deliberately; its interest is in two people being careful with each other. The other people at the company are part of that care. Hokuto Matsumura and Mone Kamishiraishi take the leads. The film screened in the Forum section of the Berlin Film Festival in 2024. Who it's for: Viewers who like quiet Japanese drama, narratives about mental health, and slow-moving films. Who it's not for: There is almost no event and the pace is very low. The narrative also offers no resolution.
