Amar Akbar Anthony

Nadirshah's 2015 Malayalam film follows three close friends in Kochi. Amar, Akbar and Anthony are unemployed, irresponsible and spend their days idling. An unexpected event upends their lives and their opinions of each other. The film takes its title from the 1977 Hindi classic but the story is entirely different; all they share is the idea of three friends from three religions. Nadirshah was known as a music director and this was his first feature. The humour is local and driven by dialogue, and the film's commercial success came largely from there. In the second half the narrative turns serious and the limits of the friendship are tested. Some viewers found the shift abrupt. Prithviraj, Indrajith and Jayasurya share the three roles. Who it's for: those who like Malayalam friendship comedies. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a consistent tone; the film moves back and forth between comedy and drama.
