What American Hot Wax Is About
The film works loosely from the story of Alan Freed, the Cleveland disc jockey who put rock and roll onto American teenage radio in the fifties. Freed was attacked from every direction: conservatives said he was corrupting the young with the devil’s music, racists resented his carrying Black music to white listeners, law enforcement went after him, and the payola investigations finished him. In Floyd Mutrux’s film Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis appear playing themselves twenty years younger. Tim McIntire plays Freed. It did poorly in cinemas, though the soundtrack album sold three hundred and seventy-five thousand copies in five weeks.
