What Amy Is About
Amy’s father was a well known rock musician who was electrocuted on stage; his daughter saw it, and from that day she stopped speaking and stopped hearing as well. Doctors can find nothing wrong with her ears, because the silence is not in her body but in what she went through. When social services insist that the child attend a school for the deaf, her mother Tanya takes her to a poor neighbourhood of Melbourne, where they meet their neighbour Robert, a musician. After three years of silence, Amy joins in for the first time with the songs Robert sings; that is, she comes back to singing rather than to speech. The screenplay of Nadia Tass’s hundred and four minute Australian film is by David Parker; Alana De Roma plays Amy, Rachel Griffiths her mother and Ben Mendelsohn plays Robert. It was completed in 1998.
