What An Ambiguous Report About the End of the World Is About
Set in a small Central European village, the film tells a story spread over twenty years. Wolves fall upon Verona’s wedding; almost everyone dies, the groom among them, and she is saved by Goran, her ten year old brother-in-law. That same day Verona gives birth to her daughter Veronika and promises the child to Goran on the spot. Ten years later, as the engagement is announced at a great feast, a circus of women arrives in the village; Veronika finds herself drawn to Michal, the son of its owner, rather than to the grown Goran. Juraj Jakubisko’s hundred and fifty four minute Czech Slovak film mixes village belief, prophecy and passages that leave realism behind; it was completed in 1997.
