What The Deserter and the Nomads Is About
The film is made of three separate stories, and all three are about war: the end of the First World War, the Second World War, and a vision of a world destroyed by nuclear weapons. The account does not try to be realistic; the scenes are built somewhere between folk tale and nightmare, with colour and music constantly pushed forward. Juraj Jakubisko also put real footage of the Soviet invasion into the film. After it was shown in Venice and Sorrento, the print with Italian subtitles was locked in a safe as evidence of the director’s anti communist activity. The ninety nine minute Slovak film was completed in 1968.
