What An Amorous Woman of Tang Dynasty Is About
Yu Xuanji becomes a Taoist priestess in order to refuse the roles laid out for women and keep on with her studies and her poetry. The decision opens a space for her and she makes a name as a poet, but her relationships, with her maid and with a wandering swordsman, carry her into scandal and finally into her own ruin. Eddie Fong’s first film as director starts from a real poet of the Tang dynasty and rebuilds the classical historical drama in the language of the Hong Kong New Wave: openly erotic and, to the same degree, about a woman’s right to choose her own life. Pat Ha plays the priestess. Produced by Shaw Brothers, it won awards for its art direction. It was shown in Hong Kong in 1984 and runs a hundred and two minutes.
