What An Elephant Sitting Still Is About
A single day for four people in a town in northern China: a schoolboy, an old man, a young woman and a neighbourhood tough. All of them want to leave and all of them believe in an elephant said to be sitting in another city. Hu Bo built it from very long takes with a camera walking behind his characters, and the four hour length is the duration of hopelessness rather than a boast. The colours are drained, the weather closed, the conversations wounding. The director died shortly after finishing it.
