What And the King Said, What a Fantastic Machine Is About
Axel Danielson and Maximilien Van Aertryck's 2023 Swedish documentary traces the path from the invention of the camera to the forty-five billion of them in use today. It is made almost entirely of found footage; archive material, surveillance cameras, live streams and phone video are set side by side. The idea is not the technology itself but how people behave in front of a camera. Examples are shown where the same gesture repeats a century apart; someone taking a selfie at a disaster site shares an impulse with an early recording. The directors do not comment; they arrange. Editing is the sole instrument, and the humour often comes from placing two images next to each other. Who it's for: those who like documentaries on media and visual culture. Who it's not for: viewers looking for a single thesis; the film offers many examples and leaves the conclusion to the viewer.
