K. V. Anand's 2015 Tamil film is a love story built on the idea of past lives. Madhumitha believes she and her colleague Ashwin were lovers in an earlier life and insists that what she sees is real, while he takes it for a symptom of illness. The film ties together stories set in three periods: on the Burmese border in the forties, in Chennai in the eighties and in the present. The same actors play different characters in each, and the story keeps it uncertain to the end whether the repetition is fate or delusion. Dhanush plays three roles with distinct differences. The production is visually ambitious and the music is decisive inside the story. It is long and the middle sections are scattered. Who it's for: viewers who like Tamil romantic thrillers and period narratives. Who it's not for: anyone expecting a consistent explanation; the film gives none.
