What Angel Dust Is About

Angel Dust follows a forensic psychiatrist trying to stop a killer murdering a woman every Monday on the Tokyo subway; the investigation leads to a cult rumored to perform reverse brainwashing. The film opened in Japan on September 23, 1994, roughly six months before the real Aum Shinrikyo sarin gas attack on March 20, 1995; critics have called this timing an uncanny pre-echo of the real event. Who it's for: anyone curious about a Japanese thriller made six months before a real tragedy it strangely seems to foreshadow. Who it's not for: viewers who'd rather watch it purely as fiction unaware of that context, since knowing it deepens the experience.
