Insomnia

A detective sent to investigate a murder in northern Norway is working in a season when the sun does not set, and cannot sleep. During a pursuit in fog he makes a grave mistake and conceals it. The film takes its tension from the detective's own lie rather than from the killer; the narrative carries the sleeplessness visually, with light constantly excessive and focus slipping. The killer appears early and the question is not capture but who will stay silent. Erik Skjoldbjaerg directed, with Stellan Skarsgard. It was later remade in America. Who it's for: those who like northern thrillers and narratives of moral collapse. Who it's not for: viewers wanting clear justice; the original is markedly darker than the remake.
