The Rip

The Rip (2026) opens with a Miami-Dade narcotics unit finding twenty million dollars in cash during a raid. The problem is not the money, it is the counting. Their lieutenant tells each member of the team a different figure, and from that moment everyone suspects everyone. It is not a heist film, it is a film about trust coming apart. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck lead, with Steven Yeun, Teyana Taylor, Sasha Calle and Kyle Chandler. Joe Carnahan directed. The core is real. It draws on a 2016 raid by Miami-Dade police captain Chris Casiano. Damon's character grieving a son lost to cancer comes from there too; Casiano lost his son to leukaemia in 2021. There is a first on the production side as well. Artists Equity, the company Damon and Affleck run, made a deal giving the 1,200 crew members bonuses tied to streaming benchmarks in the first ninety days, described as the first arrangement of its kind. It was made for 100 million dollars, began shooting in Los Angeles in October 2024, and went out on Netflix on 16 January 2026. It runs 113 minutes. Good for: police corruption drama, suspicion in confined spaces, and watching Damon and Affleck together. Less good for: do not come for action, this is built on conversation and glances. Reviews were warm rather than enthusiastic, with the common complaint that the setup promises more than the ending delivers.
