Andrzej Mastalerz What Angelus Is About
In a mining town in Upper Silesia, a community of workers who paint builds a belief system of its own: they live by prophecies, by the stars and by hidden knowledge, and calculate the end of the world. Over the years some of what they foretell actually happens, and the community takes that as proof that it is right. The film starts from a real community of painters and gives its events with humour, in scenes composed like pictures. Life below ground in the mine and a faith that looks at the sky stand in the same frame. Lech Majewski’s hundred and three minute Polish film was completed in 2001 and is counted among the examples of the director’s painterly manner.
