What Animals Are Beautiful People Is About

Jamie Uys shot across the Namib, the Kalahari and the Okavango, then cut what he had into something closer to a comedy than a study, with a narrator forever hunting the next joke. It won the Golden Globe for best documentary of 1974 and drew very large audiences. Its most famous passage, in which animals appear helplessly drunk on fermented marula fruit, is not what it presents itself as: the fruit had been soaked in alcohol for the shoot, and there is no evidence that wild animals get drunk this way. Uys went on to make The Gods Must Be Crazy.
