Anjaam

Rahul Rawail's 1994 Indian film follows a wealthy man who mistakes a flight attendant's courtesy for interest, and how his obsession destroys her life. Shah Rukh Khan plays one of the harshest villain roles of his career here and won the Filmfare award in the negative role category for it. The film is honest in never romanticising the obsession: what the man does is plainly criminal, and the woman's resistance is at the centre. In the second half Madhuri Dixit's character ends up in prison and the film turns into a revenge story, hardening in genre. The telling at times runs to excess and the scenes of violence against women are long. Who it's for: viewers interested in Indian cinema of the nineties and Shah Rukh Khan's villain period. Who it's not for: anyone avoiding content involving violence against women, or wanting measured storytelling.
