What Anne of Green Gables Is About
Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert send for a boy to help on the farm and are sent a talkative, headlong girl instead. They keep her, and the village takes to her almost as quickly as they do. This 1934 version of Lucy Maud Montgomery's 1908 novel was one of the four biggest earners RKO had that year, and the thing most often remembered about it now happened off screen. The young actress playing Anne had been working under the name Dawn O'Day; afterwards she took her stage name from the character and was billed as Anne Shirley for the rest of her career. She returned to the part in 1940 for Anne of Windy Poplars.
