Anuraga Karikkin Vellam

Khalid Rahman's first film follows a father and son in parallel. The son is trying to end things with his girlfriend and does not know how; the father is dealing with a distance in his own marriage that has gone unspoken for a long time. The two stories comment on each other. The film's best decision is taking the young people's relationship seriously. The mocking gaze common in Malayalam cinema is absent here; the decision to separate is genuinely difficult, and however clumsily the character handles it the film does not belittle him. Biju Menon plays the father and Asif Ali the son. Rajisha Vijayan became known through this film. The telling is calm and the humour everyday; there is no large event and the film has no need of one. Who it's for: those who like the new generation of Malayalam cinema and relationship drama. Who it's not for: viewers who want a distinct plot; the film is built almost entirely from conversation.
