What Appointment in London Is About
During the Second World War, bombing flights leave a base in England for Germany almost every night. Wing Commander Tim Mason, who leads the squadron, has flown eighty seven missions and is soon to be taken off operations; the strain is beginning to show, but he does not want to stop. To keep his men’s minds on the job he allows no women on the base, and then meets Eve, an officer in the navy. The film tells repetition rather than heroism: take-off, the count, those who do not come back, and the same again the next night. Dirk Bogarde takes the lead in Philip Leacock’s ninety six minute British film; it was completed in 1953.
