April, May and June

When Mies learns she is dying she wants to tell each of her three daughters herself, in person, and calls them home. The three half-sisters, named April, May and June, have different fathers and have lived at a distance from one another for years. Gathered under one roof, each of them starts questioning her own life: where are we, what do we still have in common, and what happens to Jan, our autistic brother. Will Koopman's Dutch film does not compress the family reckoning into a single scene of shouting; it gets to know the three women separately and shows where the distance between them came from. The news of the death functions here as a beginning rather than an end. Linda de Mol, Tjitske Reidinga and Elise Schaap play the sisters. The real question the film puts is who the responsibility will fall to.
