Friend

Cemil and Azem have been friends since their student days. Cemil has become rich and lives comfortably in a coastal town with his wife Necibe; Azem has kept his tie to where he came from and has moved somewhere else entirely in political terms. Azem’s arrival at the house breaks the arrangement: Melike, the wife’s sister, attaches herself to him, Necibe’s affair comes out, and the distance between the two men stops being something that can close. Yılmaz Güney directed, wrote and produced it and played Azem himself, with Kerim Afşar as Cemil and Melike Demirağ as Melike. There is a contradiction inside the record: the Turkish summary calls the wealthy friend Cemil while the English summary calls the same character Ahmed. Cemil is the right one.
