At the end of the fifties, in Africo, a village in the Aspromonte mountains of Calabria, a woman dies in childbirth because the doctor cannot get there in time. No road connects the village to anywhere. So the villagers put down their work and start building a road themselves, children included. At the same time a teacher arrives from the north: Giulia, who is to teach the children standard Italian. Against her stands the local mafioso Don Totó, who benefits from the village staying cut off. Mimmo Calopresti's film is about the abandonment of the south and about a community trying to end it with its own hands. Valeria Bruni Tedeschi and Marcello Fonte star.
