What Au Revoir Taipei Is About
Kai works days in his parents' noodle shop and spends his nights in a bookshop teaching himself French, because he means to follow his girlfriend to Paris. When she ends it by phone he only becomes more determined to go. The local neighbourhood boss offers him a free ticket in exchange for carrying a small package. That night everything in Taipei tangles together. Arvin Chen's first feature turns a night of chases into a gentle city comedy: Susie from the bookshop, amateur gangsters, inattentive police. Wim Wenders is among its producers, having noticed Chen after his award-winning short at Berlin. The film took the best Asian film award at Berlin in 2010.
