What Austeria Is About

The first day of the First World War, at an inn in Galicia close to the Russian border. Tag, the innkeeper, is Jewish, and overnight his inn becomes a shelter: a group of Hasidim from the neighbouring village, an Austrian baroness and a Hungarian cavalryman cut off from his unit all end up under one roof. Cossacks are outside, and the fear of being given away fills the room. Jerzy Kawalerowicz adapted Julian Stryjkowski's novel and wrote the screenplay with the author himself and with Tadeusz Konwicki. Franciszek Pieczka's innkeeper carries almost the whole weight of the film.
