What Autumn Moon Is About
Tokio, a Japanese tourist, comes to Hong Kong in search of food and meets fifteen year old Pui Wai. Her family is dealing with the paperwork of emigrating to Canada while she has stayed in the city with her eighty year old grandmother, and an odd, gentle friendship forms among the three of them even without a language fully in common. The film shows a Hong Kong with the 1997 handover approaching, a city caught between those leaving and those staying; the grandmother’s cooking and the tourist’s search for a taste become two faces of the same loss. In Clara Law’s hundred and eight minute film, Masatoshi Nagase plays Tokio and Lee Pui-Wai plays Pui Wai. It was completed in 1992 and won the Golden Leopard at Locarno the same year.
