Farewell China

Li Hung spent years trying to get a visa for America. The point was to study and build something better for her family. The visa comes through at last. She goes to New York. Her husband Nansan and their small son stay behind. The family lives in a village in Guangdong. Before long her letters stop. Nansan is smuggled into the United States. New York is entirely strange to him. He searches the city street by street. A young Chinese American girl named Jane helps him. The longer the search runs, the clearer it becomes what living without papers means. Shooting began just after the events of 1989 in Tiananmen Square. Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Ka-fai lead the hundred and fourteen minute film, a Hong Kong production Clara Law finished in 1990.
