Ayalum Njanum Thammil

Lal Jose's 2012 Malayalam film follows Ravi, a young doctor indifferent to his profession, starting work at a provincial hospital. The story runs in two periods: the successful specialist of today and the careless intern of years before. What joins them is what a physician named Dr Samuel taught him. What makes it interesting is refusing to present medicine as a field of heroism: the cost of a mistake, the lack of resources and the daily pressure in hospitals are set out in detail. Prathap Pothan's Samuel is restrained. Prithviraj's performance carries the difference between the two periods. It runs long and the romantic line feels unnecessary. Who it's for: viewers who like Malayalam drama and stories about a profession. Who it's not for: anyone wanting pace, or avoiding subjects of medical error and death.
