What Baby Snakes Is About
Frank Zappa filmed the concerts he played at the Palladium in New York on Halloween 1977, and what came out of it runs past two and a half hours and is very strange. Between the stage footage sit backstage recordings, horseplay with the crew, and Bruce Bickford’s handmade clay animation, whose endlessly transforming figures work like a second language running through the film. Zappa directed it, cut it and even distributed it himself. He opened it on his own birthday and ran it twenty four hours a day at a Manhattan cinema.
