Back to the 90s

Yanyong Kuruaungkoul's 2015 Thai film follows a high school student accidentally sent into the past. He finds himself in the mid-nineties and meets his parents in their university years, then decides to change that period in order to fix their marriage in the present. The humour comes from the difference of era. Technology, fashion and musical habits are constant comic material; the lead tries to gain an advantage in the past with what he knows now and fails every time. The narrative does not take the rules of time travel seriously. The aim is not consistency but recalling Thai popular culture of the nineties; the references are dense and largely local. Who it's for: those who like Thai youth comedy and nineties nostalgia. Who it's not for: viewers unfamiliar with the local culture; most of the jokes rest on Thai music and television of the period.
