What Backwood Philosopher Is About
Konsta Pylkkänen, a self taught country philosopher, guides a group of researchers through the Kainuu wilderness in Finland while waiting, in his own phrase, for a blue thought, the idea that arrives out of nowhere. He is a man who takes every question that occurs to him seriously, from what a tapeworm is good for to the dimensions of space, and while firing at a bird in the forest he genuinely makes a scientific discovery. Kari Väänänen’s hundred and ten minute film was adapted from the classic novel of the same name by Veikko Huovinen, and it reduces its hero neither to peasant cunning nor to pedantry. Kai Lehtinen plays the lead, with Tommi Korpela, Hannu-Pekka Björkman and Ilkka Heiskanen alongside him.
