Bad Living

João Canijo's 2023 Portuguese film is set in a family-run hotel on the northern coast. Several generations of women from the same family live there together. Their relationships are poisoned by old accounts. Tension rises when a granddaughter long unseen arrives; the narrative does not let the conflict break and keeps the silence going. It was designed together with a second film shot in the same hotel, which tells the same days from the guests' side. Anabela Moreira and Rita Blanco appear. The camera keeps its distance and the voices overlap. Who it's for: those who like Portuguese cinema and formally demanding family drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting resolution; the film leaves its tension unresolved.
