What In the Darkness of the Night Is About
In a small Portuguese town, the night club run by Nelson and Celeste is in fact part of a network of prostitution and human trafficking. Their daughter Carla knows what the house really is and tries to hold the arrangement together, while her younger sister Sonia dreams of becoming a singer. When the accounts at the club go wrong the father agrees to hand over his own daughter to settle the debt, and Carla does everything she can to stop it. The film shows the women not as victims but as people who speak knowing exactly what is happening. Joao Canijo moves an old Greek tragedy, the story of a father who consents to sacrifice his daughter, into present day Portugal. The ninety four minute production was completed in 2004 and was shown in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.
