What Banksy and the Rise of Outlaw Art Is About
Banksy has spent more than twenty years getting into street walls, museum galleries and auction houses while his identity remains unknown. The documentary goes through his work and his methods: pictures hung without permission, exhibitions set up in secret, a piece that shredded itself in an auction room, and murals carrying a political message. At the same time it watches how street art itself turned into a market. Elio Espana's film talks to people from Banksy's circle and to commentators from the art world; it contains no new interview with the artist himself and rests on archive material. The question it puts is an uncomfortable one: does work made against the system still object to anything once it sells for millions. The documentary gives no clear answer, and lets both sides speak.
