Feels Good Man

In 2005 Matt Furie drew a frog called Pepe: a lazy, good-natured comic character hanging around with his friends. Then the internet took him. The documentary follows Pepe's route from forum posts to a symbol of the far right, from there onto a list of hate symbols, and finally to being reused as an emblem of freedom in the Hong Kong protests. Arthur Jones tells it from the artist's view: to take his character back Furie first kills him and then goes to court. The real subject is not a drawing but what can be done with an image once it has left its author, and how internet culture manufactures meaning. It took a special jury award at Sundance.
