Liis Kuresoo What Smoke Sauna Sisterhood Is About
Smoke Sauna Sisterhood is Anna Hints' feature documentary debut, an Estonian, French, and Icelandic co-production that won the Directing Award in the World Cinema Documentary section at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, the first time an Estonian director's documentary was selected for the festival. The film also won Best Documentary at the European Film Awards. The southern Estonian smoke sauna tradition it documents was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014, a tradition covering not just bathing customs but birch whisk making and smoking meat in the sauna. Who it's for: anyone curious about a real, UNESCO protected Estonian tradition captured in a documentary that won a directing award at Sundance. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a distant, observational documentary style, since the film includes direct, intimate confessions.
