Mistress Dispeller

Elizabeth Lo's 2025 documentary is about a woman hired in China to end extramarital affairs. Teacher Wang does this as a profession; she enters the life of the betrayed spouse, meets the person involved and tries to end the situation without a fight. The documentary follows a single case from beginning to end and stays beside all three parties. Nobody emerges entirely bad or entirely right; the narrative shows marriage as an economic order as much as a matter of feeling. Lo had previously made a documentary about street dogs in Istanbul; here too the camera stays close without intervening. The consent conditions of the filming are the openly debated aspect of the film. Who it's for: those who like observational documentary and are curious about contemporary Chinese society. Who it's not for: viewers sensitive to documentary ethics; how much the people recorded knew at the outset is not entirely clear.
