Mike de Leon's 1982 Filipino film follows Sid, twenty-one, trying to join a university fraternity. Across a six-month initiation he and six other candidates are subjected to severe physical and psychological torture. The subject is how obedience is learned. The candidates accept more at every stage and that acceptance is presented as their own choice; the organisation's power comes not from force but from willingness. The film was made under martial law and the fraternity structure was read as an open analogy for the political order of the time. De Leon does not aestheticise the violence; the scenes are long and static. Mark Gil leads. Who it's for: those who like Filipino cinema and dramas built on authority. Who it's not for: viewers troubled by scenes of torture and humiliation; the film shows them in detail and repeatedly.
