What Baton Out of the Bag Is About
A poor but good hearted musician is rewarded for sharing his last piece of bread while hungry himself: he is given a magic napkin on which the finest food appears. But a greedy innkeeper steals it from him, along with a magic donkey that pours out ducats. One last gift is left to him, and unlike the others it does not fill anyone’s stomach; it teaches him to defend himself. The film was adapted from a children’s book and tells the justice of the fairy tale in plain, direct language. The magic objects arrive as a reward for kindness, but what lies underneath is that holding on to them is a separate business. Jaromir Pleskot’s seventy minute Czechoslovak film was completed in 1956.
