What Bawarchi Is About
Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1972 film is adapted from Tapan Sinha's 1966 Bengali picture. The Sharma household is a house that argues constantly despite being named for peace, and because they treat their staff the same way, their cooks keep leaving. The Raghu who finally arrives turns out to be a man who can do everything: he cooks, he knows music, he talks to each of them separately and unpicks the knots in the house one by one. Nobody knows who he actually is. Rajesh Khanna and Jaya Bhaduri lead. One of the best-loved family comedies in Indian cinema.
